Welcome to the Department of Surveying and Geoinformatics Engineering of the School of Engineering of the International Hellenic University. According to Law 4610/2019 (Government Gazette 70/A’/7.5.2019) the introductory specialization course in Surveying Engineering and Geoinformatics Technological Education of the former T.E.I. of Central Macedonia is incorporated now by the Dept. of Surveying and Geoinformatics Engineering of I.H.U.

The cognitive/scientific subject treated by the Department (Surveying and Geoinformatics) concerns the mapping, analysis, organization and management of space (natural and socio-economic).

In particular, it concerns (Government Gazette 742/20.06.2006 vol. B’):

  • the creation and update of the appropriate cartographic background by employing surveying and photogrammetric instruments and methods as well as remote sensing research, making use of contemporary methods of science and with the aid of informatics, to utilize it in studies dealing with road construction, hydraulics, urban planning, spatial planning, cadastral and agricultural development
  • the management and exploitation of spatial information and the production of thematic maps (Applications of Geographical Information Systems-GIS) in various study areas: cadastral, geological, environmental impact, spatial planning, urban planning, regional development, agricultural development, utilization and management of natural resources as well as prevention-management of natural disasters

These scientific objects and methods are in agreement with UNESCO’s international categorization of scientific fields in education (ISCED 2013-F). Thus, the general scientific field of the Department covers in whole or in part the following individual scientific categories:

  • 0532 (Earth Sciences) which further includes the scientific fields of Geodesy, Geography (physical), Geomatics, Geospatial Technology
  • 0731 (Architecture and town planning), which further includes the scientific fields of Cartography, Land Surveying, Surveying, Topography, Town and Regional Planning και Urban Planning
  • 0732 (Building and civil engineering), which further includes the scientific fields of Road building, Water engineering and technology, Water supply and sewerage engineering
  • 0521 (Environmental sciences) which further includes the scientific fields of Ecology, Environmental science
  • 0314 (Sociology and cultural studies) which further includes the scientific fields of Demography, Geography (social) and Human Geography
  • in addition, there are scientific subjects treated by the Department that are not mentioned such as Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing and Global Navigation Satellite System

In Greece there are three similar Departments: a) School of Rural & Surveying Engineering – Geoinformatics Engineering at NTUA, b) School of Rural & Surveying Engineering at AUTH and c) the homonymous Department of Surveying and Geoinformatics Engineering at UWA
