The Department of Surveying & Geoinformatics Engineering of the International Hellenic University (I.H.U.), was established by Law 4610/2019 (Government Gazette 70/Α’/7.5.2019) that addresses synergies between universities and technological educational institutes. A historical review of the Department includes the following time stations:
- 1999 Establishment of the Department of Geoinformatics and Surveying at the School of Technological Applications at the Technological Educational Institute of Serres
- 2000 First year of academic operation
- 2004 Partnership with the Department of Geology and Environment of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens for the organization and operation of a Postgraduate Study Program entitled “Prevention and Management of Natural Disasters”. The Program has operated successfully for 10 years
- 2006 First Internal Evaluation and conduct of graduate survey
- 2009 Installation of the Department in its own newly built buildings
- 2012 First External Evaluation of the Department by three evaluators from US and Canadian universities (Prof. Dr. Peggy Agouris (Chairperson) George Mason University, Washington DC, USA, Prof. Dr. Costas Armenakis York University, Toronto, Canada, Prof. Dr. Michael Sideris University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada) with very positive results
- 2013 Merging of the Department with the Civil Engineering Department of TEI of Serres and the Landscape Architecture Department of TEI of Kavala in a new Department entitled Department of Civil Engineering TE and Surveying and Geoinformatics TE of TEI of Central Macedonia and two introductory directions (ATHENA Program)
- 2017 Establishment and operation from the 2017-2018 academic year of the Postgraduate Program entitled “Interventions in existing buildings and urban ensembles: reinforcements, reuse and spatial renewals”
- 2019 Re-establishment of the Department of Surveying & Geoinformatics Engineering as an independent Department of the School of Engineering of the International Hellenic University, with a five-year Undergraduate Study Program (USP). Commencement of operation as a five-year university department from the academic year 2019-2020. Parallel operation of the former 4-year USP (former TEI) and the new 5-year USP.
The Department of Surveying and Geoinformatics has the exclusive use of 3,000 sq.m. of a building within the Serres Campus of IHU that was completed in 2009.
It has:
- 3 classrooms with a total capacity of 220 people
- 1 amphitheater (PTOLEMIOS) with a capacity of 220 people
- 8 laboratories with a total capacity of 197 people
- Conference room of the Department
- Offices for the teaching staff members of the Department
- Secretariat Offices (in the campus administration building)
- Wired internet infrastructure in all educational, research and office spaces with ultra-high-speed network (over 500 Mbps upload and download) as well as Wi-Fi throughout the building
- Provision of accessibility features of the building for people with disabilities (elevator, ramps to access the building, special WC for the disabled)
In addition, it has access to the use of:

b. the Central Campus Amphitheater
c. the Teleconference Room
