Doctoral studies in the Department

The Doctoral Studies in Surveying and Geoinformatics Engineering department, of I.H.U., aim to advance knowledge through the production of original scientific research and lead to the acquisition of a Doctorate Degree.
The Doctoral Diploma is the highest academic title, which certifies the acquisition of the research methodology upon completion of the original scientific research prepared and the substantial contribution of the holder to the development of science and knowledge in the respective scientific discipline.
The Doctoral Studies Regulations reflect the structure and operating rules of the Doctoral Studies Program of Surveying and Geoinformatics Engineering Department of I.H.U.
The Doctoral Studies Program of Surveying and Geoinformatics Engineering Department is organized and operates in accordance with the provisions of Law 4957/2022 and the relevant provisions and decisions in force.

Eligible Applicants
Those who cumulatively meet the following conditions have the right to submit an application for the preparation of a Doctoral Thesis in the Department of Surveying & Geoinformatics Engineering:

Α. Degree from a Greek HEI (University or Technological Sector) or a degree from a similar university abroad recognized by Hellenic National Academic Recognition and Information Center (Hellenic NARIC).

Β. Master’s Degree or Doctoral Degree from a Greek university or equivalent university abroad recognized by Hellenic NARIC. In case of not possessing a postgraduate degree, a necessary condition is that the candidate is a graduate of a HEI’s undergraduate study program, of a minimum duration of five years, corresponding to three hundred (300) credits of the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS). The grade of the postgraduate degree should be:

α) For studies in Greece, greater than or equal to seven «7.0»

β) For studies in the UK, greater than or equal to seventy percent “70%”

γ) For studies in USA greater than or equal to «Β».

δ) For studies in other countries, it will be specified by the Department Assembly.

2. The appropriateness of the qualifications and the adequacy of the candidate’s knowledge are examined by the three-member evaluation committee and approved exclusively by the Department Assembly.

3. Adequate knowledge of the English language documented by relevant certificate equivalent to at least the State Certificate of Language Level B2 or other certificate documenting good knowledge or other – scientifically tested – language or other reliable evidence, certifying the capability of accessing relevant international bibliography and ensuring the scientific communication. Holders of an undergraduate or postgraduate university degree in English or another – scientifically tested – language are exempt from this obligation.

Duration
1. The duration for obtaining the Doctoral Degree is at least three (3) full calendar years from the date of appointment of the Three-Member Advisory Committee.

2. The maximum time to complete the thesis is defined in any case at six (6) years. The above time may be extended through annual extensions for two (2) additional years, upon application by the candidate and a documented decision of the Department Assembly, with the consent of the Three-Member Advisory Committee.

3. The doctoral candidate may request suspension of studies for one (1) full calendar year with his/her application, which is accompanied by a sufficiently justified recommendation of the Three-Member Advisory Committee and approved by the Department’s Assembly. During the suspension, the status of the doctoral candidate and the rights deriving from it are revoked. The time of study suspension is not counted towards the maximum total time for preparing the Doctoral Dissertation. The candidate has the right to terminate the suspension of his studies. Suspension applications must not exceed two (2).
